The Island Samui is Thailand's third largest island, located about 496 km.(308 miles) south of Bangkok, and it belongs to Surat Thani Province.

Samui Island is Thailand’s self-styled Boutique Island, with its lovely beaches and laid back atmosphere. Almost entirely developed now as a tourist island, Samui remains low-rise and is popular not only for travel but also foreigners owning villas and property on Samui Island.

The most popular beaches on Samui Island are Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach: both have are a little crowded. For more peace and quiet, Mae Nam , Bo Phut and Big Buddha on the northern coast.

Geography (Location And Area):
Samui Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 35 km northeast of Surat Thani town (9°N, 100°E). Samui Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 700 km. to the south of Bangkok. Samui has an area of 247 sq. km., making it the third largest island of Thailand after Phuket and Chang Island. It is the main island of a group of 48 islands.

Administration:
Samui Island is an Amphoe (district) of Surat Thani province administering 7 districts (tambons). The district covers the island, as well as the Ang Thong archipelago and some other small islands nearby.

Climate:
Samui Island has essentially two seasons: warm and tropical most of the year, with a short rainy season.Samui's weather is relatively dry for the vast majority of the year, with the rainy season being primarily confined to November. For the rest of the year, since the weather is tropical, when it does rain, it usually doesn’t last long; rain showers of 20–60 minutes are typical. The hot season lasts from February to May and the rainy season from June to January.

Lifestyle:
Although Samui island is in southern Thailand, where Islam has a strong influence, the original inhabitants of the island, known as 'Chao Samui', are predominantly Buddhist.

Samui is famous for its high quality coconuts growing densely everywhere.

Topography:
Most area of the island is a plain with a mountain range in the middle.

Language:
The Southern dialect and the standard Thai language are spoken. English is widely understood in tourist areas.
